Name of the Department: ENGLISH
a) About the Department: Udali College, Bamungaon was established in the year 1995 and it launched the English Department in the same year. Till 2010 the syllabus was 1+1+1 three years Degree Course and then GAUHATI UNIVERSITY introduced a three years semester system degree course. In 2019 as instructed by the GU the department offered CHOICE BASED CREDIT SYSTEM (CBCS) Semester under graduate programme with honours in English, along with the compulsory papers such as Ability-Enhancement Compulsory Courses , Skill Enhancement Courses and Alternative English.

Aims and objectives of our Department:
1.The department aims to cater to the needs of training in English as a medium of communication and as a global language essential for the students’ all-round academic and professional development.
2. By offering the undergraduate B.A. in English Course, the department seeks to keep up with the equivalent colleges that have left their mark in the field of English Literary studies and sensitize students to the wider world of literature in an international language.
3.To transcend their knowledge of grammatical & compositional aptitude which would meet the needs of the dynamic career and professional demands.
4.To impart the various technical skills of assessing and analyzing literature of different types and build a sensibility of appreciating literature.
5.To prepare the students of the locality for higher education in the concerned discipline and groom them for associated professions.
Semester wise action plan for Teaching
Admission Policy: The Admission process has been undertaken by the admission committee constituted as per guidelines of the college authority. Merit is considered on the result of the last exam appeared by the candidate and specially marks obtained in English for taking admission in English Major.
Counseling and qualifying test for Major Students: The Dept. of English initiates a qualifying test (written) for taking a major in English among those willing students having 45% in the concerned subject in the last final exam.
Action Plan: The department takes a lot of measures to increase the enrolment and make students' results better.
Counseling:
1.Counseling is considered to be a key aspect by the department for smooth running of the teaching learning process. In the very beginning of the new session or induction program has been undertaken by the faculties of the department expecting that students of the English department can easily access the course.
2.Remedial classes have been initiated for the slow learners selecting on the basis of their performance in the internal assessment.
3.Flexibility of departmental class routine has been maintained as per requirement of the students of concerned dept.
4.Both financial and psychological support have been provided in case of poor students sent to those having mental stress.
Class Allotment:
Every year a departmental annual meeting is organized by the department of English. All the faculty members’ presence in the meeting is mandatory. In this meeting the course has been distributed equally among the faculty members (paper wise). It is also mentioned that in every academic session the topic in every allotment to each faculty member has to be changed. The HOD presides over the annual departmental meeting.Various departmental and inter departmental seminars, group discussion, educational tour & project work have been practiced by the dept. for all round enrichment of the students of the department.
Detection of slow learners and steps taken for them:
1.Admission of students is done in the College based on the academic performance of other previous examinations. Yet we are facing a lack of equality input.
2.Slow learners are identified on the basis of classroom intersections, assignments and performance in the sessional exam specially.
Steps Taken: To improve the quality of the slow learners generally we arranged some remedial measures, such as-
i).Remedial special classes are arranged for the slow learners.
ii).Giving some homework to prepare notes for her/his syllabus.
iii).Attempting to make them free and frank regarding their quarries and problems.
iv).Arrangement of khata of remedial attendance.
v).They are providing study materials.
Student’s feedback and action taken report:
Feedback is collected from our passed out students both by offline and online methods. Format for feedback are compiled with the issue of teachers punctuality, communication skill, friendly behavior, using TLM in class etc. and feedback for the department and institution at a large from the feedback the department of English has been trying to improve demanded by the students feedback for making it more friendly and helpful to the students of the college.
Initiative Practices taken by the department:
1.Teachers Exchange Program:
Teachers Exchange Program serves as a cultural learning experience for the teachers and as a means for expanding and enriching an educator’s pedagogic expertise. Keeping in mind the department of English, Udali College has decided to introduce this program with the different colleges. Apart from this inter departmental teachers exchange a program has also been conducted by the department among the faculty members of the College.
Group Discussion: Group discussion of the English department includes in every paper. Group discussion makes students more clear about the topic taught by the teacher. After that, if they have confusion about the topic they can ask their teachers any questions. So, it is beneficial for them. After their discussion, they get marks or grades when teachers ask something about the topic.
Extension Activities of our Department
Our Department has so far arranged many programs for the development of the students, faculty and the college and the scciety. Our department always shows keen interest in enhancing research based activities and language development Programs. The Department always tries to improve the speaking, listening, writing and reading skills of the students by organizing various communication skill development courses and programs. To build the students excellence in English language and literature the department takes the following steps:
Best Practices of the Department:
*The faculties of the Department visits select nearby Junior Colleges(12th Standard) at least once a month to help develop the student’s communication skill and have friendly bond with the institutions for future collaborations. We take as it as our duty to help the rural vernacular medium students to remove their English phobia and make them confident to acquire the global language.
*After the commencement of the NEP-2020 the Department has been trying to help the student get their Dig-locker accounts for the purpose of Academic Bank of Credit. WE have made it our departmental best practice for the coming few years until each and every student have their accounts and know the importance of it.

Our Department has a small library having 110 nos. of Books. It contains text books and reference books. Separate books issue register has been maintained by the department and one of the faculty members is accorded to be assigned for keeping the records. Students can borrow books every working day. We collect books from outgoing students and from faculty members of our department as donations to the department library.
Future Plans of the Department:
Our Department plans to organize state/national/ international seminars/ workshops/ popular talks every year with the aid of some funding agencies like UGC,RUSA , ICSSR, Higher Education Department and other agencies.We are going to publish an ISBN book from our department. The English department plans to organize different FDP also in future. This will certainly benefit the students as well as teachers to acquire knowledge in concerned areas. This will also help both the students and teachers to interact with national and international academicians and scholars will draw their attention towards scientific research.
The department plans to arrange educational tours, different programs related to academic progression,and picnics once in a year. From the tours , performing in different programs and field visits, the students will be inspired to write project reports and able to increase their confidence, curiosity and research aptitude as well.

Opportunity :
• Timely recommendation of teachers in vacant posts.
• Revised syllabus enables the students to remain updated.
• Because of mandatory 75% attendance of each student, students can acquire the maximum benefit of the teachings.
Challenges:
1. Poor road connectivity of the adjacent villages. Students find it difficult to reach the college during rain.
2. Because of the poor economic condition, the learners get it hard to bear the daily travelling expenses to reach the college
3. Many teachers are providing their services without getting any government salary or financial assistance.
Suggestions :
The Department of English of the college needs some basic infrastructural facilities such as a big separate digital departmental room, big size natural and political maps of North East India, India and the world,available furniture, bookshelves, one more steel Almirah, globe, photo frames etc.
Therefore the department requests the management and the Principal to provide all the necessary things in a most effective way and seeks cooperation and support from all, to bring success to the above proposed action plan.
